Football Drills to Add to Your Practice Routine: Oklahoma Drills

October 12, 2017

Learn how to set up and execute this staple training exercise used by football teams of all ages.

In football, physicality is everything. The intense nature of the sport calls on players to meet one another head-on with blocks, hits and tackles. In order to remain dominant and safe on the gridiron, you have to train these fundamentals. There are few exercises that work these necessities as well as the Oklahoma Drill.

Designed to train blocking, tackling, physicality and point-of-attack, the Oklahoma Drill utilizes a blocker, defender and running back. To set up this tried-and-true training method, all you will need will be two step-over pads placed several feet apart to create the running lane. The running back will line up a few yards behind the blocker, who will be face-to-face with the defender in a three-point stance.

At the sound of the whistle, the blocker and defender will clash in the lane while the running back will read the block and travel up field. The blocker should aim to push out the defender for a wider hole, while the defender should try to shed the block for an easy tackle.

The Oklahoma Drill also builds a team’s strength through competition and comradery. While the blocker and defender battle between the dummies, the rest of the team should be right there cheering them on, adding fuel to the fire and seeing who will come out on top. The enthusiasm should be present as they sharpen more than just their point-of-attack skills.

The Oklahoma is a fantastic drill to strengthen the skills necessary to meet the season’s matchups head-on. Follow these Pro Tips to prep your team for this football season’s upcoming battles.
