Football Warmups: Step Dummy Drills

October 12, 2017

At the start of your football practice, it’s best to incorporate a few warmup drills to get the blood flowing and your players ready to tackle the day. Heads Up Football master trainer Chris Merritt has outlined four bag drills help loosen players up for the training ahead.

To set up these bag calisthenics, grab five or six step-over dummy pads and lay them out on the field in a parallel line. Think of each pad as a rung on a ladder, with enough room in-between to step and maneuver. You can also place a cone a few yards from both the first and last pad to serve as start and finish lines.

For the first bag drill, have players high-knee over the bags, placing one foot in each space. Upon crossing the final pad, sprint to the cone and quickly turn around to await further instructions for the next drill.

After completing the one-foot-in exercise, start your second bag drill by having your players, again, high-knee over the structures. But in this sequence, they’ll place two feet in each space. If they are confused or struggling to keep a solid rhythm, tell them not to be afraid to slow down and collect themselves.

For the third bag drill, your players will perform what Merritt calls a “Bunny Hop,” where they approach the bags and jump into each space, landing with both feet at the same time, until they reach the end of the dummies.

Finally, for the final warmup exercise, incorporate some lateral movement to get the change-of-direction skillset revved up by having players serpentine through the bags, approaching from the left side first.

Try out these warmup drills and get your football practice off on the right foot.
